Let’s be honest – the design and marketing industries loves a good buzzword. From visual identity to storytelling, from inbound marketing to outbound marketing, it can feel like everyone’s talking in code (let’s not get started on html and xml!) And if you’re not totally sure what the difference is between a brand, branding, and a logo… you’re not alone. So let’s cut through the noise and explain it all in plain English – no fluff, no jargon, no BS.

Common Confusions

Here’s a list of some of the common brand-related terms that often cause confusion.

Brand

This is what your customers think and feel about your business. It lives in their heads and hearts, not your logo files. As Jeff Bezos of Amazon once said, “Your brand is what other people say about you when you’re not in the room.”

Branding

The process of shaping your customers’ thoughts and feelings through strategy, visuals, tone of voice and customer experience.

Brand Identity

The visual bits – logos, colour palettes, fonts, and so on – that people visually recognise you by.

Visual Identity

Same as brand identity, just a fancier way of saying it!

Logo

One symbol (the emblem or graphic mark) that identifies you or your organisation. Important, yes. But just one of several ingredients in the ‘branding cake’!

Brand Positioning

Where you sit in the market vs. your competitors, and how you stand out. It’s your spot on the shelf.

Brand Voice

How your brand talks to your customers. Your tone of voice, whether it’s cheeky, formal, down-to-earth or poetic – tone matters. It reflects your brand’s personality and is the way in which your brand can create a point of difference.

Brand Personality

The human traits your brand would have if it were, well, a human. It’s how people connect with you.

Brand Culture

The internal stuff – your values, behaviours and the vibe inside your business. It shows through, whether you like it or not.

Brand Equity

The added commercial value beyond your product. If people are willing to pay more and / or choose you just because it’s you – that’s brand equity.

Brand Story / Storytelling

Your “why,” your reason for setting up your brand and your journey behind it so far – and how you tell it in a way that resonates. Not a fairytale – something real, something authentic.

Brand Refresh

A little tidy-up. Same brand, but polished – new look, tone, or tweaks to stay relevant and up-to-date.

Rebrand

A bigger shift. A new direction, identity, or even a new name. Think makeover, not just makeup.

Brand Guidelines

Your brand rulebook – what to do (and not do) with your visuals and voice to stay consistent and coherent across every communication touchpoint.

Brand Experience

Warren Buffett, the famous American investor, once said, “Customers will eventually forget the price they paid for a product, but they will remember how they were treated.” The brand experience is about every interaction someone has with your brand – from your website to your customer service. It all counts (this experience forms an opinion of your company in the customers’ mind – see ‘Brand’).

Brand Assets

Anything designed or written that represents your brand, whether the logos, templates, tone of voice docs, even your email footer.

Brand Archetype

The ‘character’ your brand embodies – hero, rebel, caregiver, etc. These are based on Carl Jung’s psychological theories, helping clients to consider their brand as a person with distinct traits, values, and behaviours. Can be a bit fluffy, but useful when done correctly.

Brand Awareness

How many people know you exist (and remember you). Not the same as fame. But close.

Brand Promise

What you’re telling people to expect from you – and ideally, what you actually deliver.

Taglines

Often referred to as straplines, these are short, snappy little phrases that sum up your brand – like Nike’s ‘Just Do It’. Think of them as verbal logos.

Call To Action (CTA)

The thing you want people to do next – click, buy, call, sign up. Make it clear, make it count.

Content Creation

Making stuff – posts, videos, graphics – that informs, adds value and keeps your brand visible.

Content Marketing

Using that stuff strategically to build trust, bring in leads, and not just shout “Buy now.”

Inbound Marketing

Attracting customers to you through useful content that adds value and SEO.

Outbound Marketing

You going to them – ads, cold emails.

Why Does All This Matter?

Here’s the deal: getting these terms right isn’t just nitpicking; it’s about making smarter business decisions.

  • Your brand is about more than just looks:
A logo alone isn’t going to make you memorable. It’s your values, your personality, and how you show up for your customers that sticks with them.
  • Consistency equals trust:
When your brand and messaging are clear, your audience knows exactly what to expect. That leads to trust. Trust leads to loyalty.
  • It’s an investment:
You’re not paying for a shiny new logo or a rebrand for the fun of it. You’re investing in something that’ll make your business stand out, get remembered and build a lasting relationship with your audience.
